sarva eva hi viśiṣṭo janaḥ śāstrārambhe sveṣṭadevatāstutiṁ kṛtavān | tathāyamevāryadharmottaraḥ | sadācārānuvṛttimātmanaḥ khyāpayansveṣṭadevatāstuteśca puṇyopacayaṁ tataśca śāstrasyāvipte parisamāptiṁ vyākhyāyāḥ śrotṛṇaṁ stutipuraḥsarayā pravṛttyā puṇyātiśayotpādanātpārārthyaṁ cālocya buddhasya bhagavataḥ stutimārabdhavān jayantītyādi | anena ślokena buddhasya bhagavata eva pūjā stotrataḥ | nānyeṣāṁ nirdiṣṭaguṇodbhavāt | stotramapi svaparārthasaṁpattyai saṁbhavatīti | pūrvaṁ svārthasaṁpadaṁ bhagavato darśayati jayanti jātivyasanetyādinā sugataparyattena manastamastānavetyādinā parārthasaṁpadam | jayanti jayaṁ kurvanti vāca iti saṁbandhaḥ | kasya vāca ityāha | suśabdo'tra śobhane'tiśaye'punarāvṛttau ca vartate'nekārthatvānnipātānām | tadayamarthaḥ | śobhanaṁ gataḥ sugataḥ sucaritavat | atiśayena gataḥ sugataḥ suparipūrṇaghaṭavat | apunarāvṛtyā gataḥ sugataḥ pradīpavat | kiṁviśiṣṭasya tasyetyāha rāgādyarāteriti | rāgaśaktirādau sa ādiryeṣāṁ dveṣādīnāṁ te rāgādayo bhavatti kleśāḥ | teṣā marātiḥ śatruḥ | yato bhagavatā sarvakleśā niḥśeṣaṁ nirdagdhā yata eva rāgādyarātirbhagavānata eva jagatastraidhātukajīvalokasya vijetā | anena svārthasaṁpatsopāyā darśitā | kiṁviśiṣṭasya jagato vijeturityāha jātivyasanetyādi | vyasanamanarthasaṁjananam | jātau vyasanamiti saptamīti yogavibhāgātsamāsaḥ | tatrābhilāṣa iti yāvat | devo'haṁ syāṁ manuṣyo'haṁ syāmityabhilāṣaḥ | yadvā vividhamanekaprakāreṇāsyate kṣipyata iti vyasanam | sāmānyena karmasādhanam | paścājjātiśabdena viśeṣaṇasamāsaḥ | jātireva vyasanam | jātyā vyasanaṁ viśiṣyate | tena jātiśabdasya viśeṣaṇatvātpūrvanipātaḥ | jātivyasanasya prabandhaḥ pravāhaḥ | tasya prasūtiḥ prasavamutpattiḥ | tasyā hetuḥ kāraṇaṁ jagattasya jagato vijeturiti | tatrāyaṁ samudāyārthaḥ | yasmācchobhanādinā gato bhagavānata eva rāgādyāratiḥ yata eva nirdagdhakleśo'to jagato vijeteti | kiṁviśiṣṭā vāco jayattītyāha manastamaityādi | manaso vikalpavijñānasya | tṛṣṇāvidyā tama eva | tama iti kṛtvā na gamatayā tamo'ndhakāro ghaṭādipratibandhaṁ karoti tathāvidyāpi viparītagrāhitayā pratibandhaṁ karoti | tanorbhāvastānavam | igattācca ladhupūrvādityaṇ | manastamasi tānavaṁ ṣaṣṭhīsamāso vā vacanapramātho draṣṭavyaḥ | manastamastānavamādadhānāstanutvaṁ kurvānāḥ sakalajanasya śruticittābhāvanākrameṇa sugatasya vācaḥ sūtrābhidharmavinayatripiṭakasvabhāvā jayatti | jayaḥ punastāsāṁ tīrthikaśāstrābhibhavalakṣaṇaḥ | yasmādbhagavatpravacane pramāṇaparicchinna upāyo vimuktilakṣaṇa upeyaśca nirdiśyate teṣāṁ cāgama upāyopeyayoḥ pramāṇarahitatvāttato bhagavata eva vāco jayatti nānyeṣāmiti bhagavataḥ stutiḥ |
samyagjñānetyādinā vinītadevavyākhyāṁ dūṣayati yato'bhidheyasyaiva prayojanaṁ na samyagjñānavyutpatteḥ śāstraprayojanasya prayojanam | sarvapuruṣārthasiddhirvyutpatteḥ samyagjñānaparijñānasyaiva prayojanam | sarvapuruṣārthasiddhiḥ prayojanaṁ yena syātprayojanaprayojanaṁ tena ca prayojanaprayojanamākhyātamiti dūṣitaṁ sāmarthyāt | atha kasmātprakaraṇasyābhidheyaprayojanami tyevamuktaṁ na punaḥ prakaraṇasya śarīraprayojanamityāha dvividhaṁ hītyāhi | yato dvividhaṁ prakaraṇasya śarīraṁ prakaraṇasya svabhāvaḥ tasmādabhidheyeti viśeṣaṇaṁ kṛtam | nanu yathābhidheyasya prayojanaṁ cintyate tathā śabdasyāpi kimiti na cintyata ityāha tatretyādi | tatpratipattya ityabhidheyapratipattaye | saṁdarbho racanāviśeṣaḥ | apiśabdādarthasaṁdarbho'pi gṛhyate | parīkṣeti parīkṣyate'nayeti parīkṣā śāstramucyate | anenetyādivākyena | yasmādityādinā samudāpārthaṁ darśayati atretyādivākyena | nanu ca yatrābhidheyaprayojanaṁ prekṣāvatāṁ pravṛttāvaṅgaṁ tathā saṁbandhādīnyapi | atastāni kimiti na kathyanta ityāha asminnabhidheyaprayojane kathite tānyapi sāmarthyātkathitāni bhavantītyarthaḥ | abhidheya eva bhāgoṁ'śaḥ saṁbandhādirāśeḥ | tasya prayojanaṁ kathayatītyarthaḥ | taddarśayati | abhidheyaprayojanameva sākṣādvācyatayā nirdiśyate abhidheyādīni tu tadviśeṣaṇatayā | codakena pradhānavācyatayābhidheyādīnyipaśyatā coditam | sāmarthyāyātatayā prarihṛtaṁ siddhāntavādinā | na caikena vākyenārthatrayaṁ sākṣācchakyate darśayitumiti darśayati natvidamityādi | ekaṁ tvityādi vākyaṁ prādhānyenaikaṁ vadadabhidheyavyutpattiprayojanasaṁbandhārthatrayaṁ pratipādayati tatra tadityādinā | apodvāreṇāvayavārthaṁ darśayati tatretyādivākye | nanu ca tadyutpattiḥ kriyata ityevaṁ yujyate vaktuṁ kimiti tadyutpādyata iti ṇicā nirdeśa iti | tatphalamāha prayojanaṁ cātretyādi | atreti prakaraṇe vakturiti śāstrakartuḥ śrotuśca prakaraṇakaraṇaśravaṇavyāpārasya prayojanaṁ cintyate | yasmāddvayorapi vaktṛśrotrostatra prakaraṇe prakaraṇakaraṇaśravaṇākhyo vyāpārau staḥ | kimiti punastayoḥ karaṇaśravaṇayoḥ prayojanaṁ cintyata ityāha tathāhītyādi | tata ācāryeṇetyādinā dvayorvyāpārasya prayojanaṁ darśayati yasmādanena samyagjñānaṁ vyutpādyata ityatra vākye vyutpattikriyāniṣpattau karaṇaśravaṇakriyādvayakartavyatayā praviṣṭam | tacca vyutpattikaraṇaṁ śāstrakārasyaiva nānyasyeti ṇicā nidarśitam | yasmātsamyagjñānaṁ vyutpādyamānāñśiṣyānprerayati vyutpāditaṁ samyagjñānaṁ vyutpadyadhvamityātmānaṁ vyutpādakaṁ kartumārabdhaṁ prakaraṇam | tasmādvaktureva karaṇavyāpārasya prayojanaṁ vyutpādanaṁ na bhājanādīnām | yadyapi tairvinā vyutpādanaṁ na bhavati tathāpi na tāni vyutpādakāni teṣāṁ śiṣyaviṣaye prerakatvābhāvāt | śiṣyaiścetyādi yasmācchiṣyā ācāryaprayuktāṁ vyutpattimātmanaḥ saṁbandhinīṁ kartumicchatti yataste pracodyāstasmāttatprakaraṇaṁ taiḥ śrūyata iti śravaṇasya prayojanaṁ vyutpādanam | etaccārthadvayaṁ ṇicā pratipāditam | anyathāsādharaṇavyāpāro vakturvyutpattau na darśitaḥ syāt śiṣyāṇaṁ ca śravaṇavyāpāraśca | yasmātsarva evaṁ prayojakaparatantro bhavati asati ṇici śiṣyā aprayojyāḥ ye cāprayojyāḥ te svatantrāḥ svatantrāṇāṁ cācāryaprayuktāṁ vyutpattimanicchatāṁ śravaṇabhāvātkathaṁ śravaṇavyāpārasya prayojanaṁ cintyata iti sthitam | nanu ca yathābhidheyavyutpādanaprayojanayorapoddhāreṇa pratipādakapadaṁ kathaṁ saṁbandhasyāpi kimiti na kathitamityāha saṁbandhapradarśanapadaṁ tvityādi | ayameva prakaraṇaviśeṣo laghūpāyatayā vakṣyamāṇayā nītyopāyo vyutpādanamupeyam | upāyopeyasaṁbandhaśca kāryakāraṇasaṁbandha eva | sa ca pratīyata iti na padāntareṇa kathitaḥ | tathā coktaṁ śāstraṁ prayojanaṁ caiva | saṁbandhasyāścayāduktau taduktyantargataḥ | tena bhinno noktaḥ prayojanāditi |
evamādivākyenābhidheyaprayojanādau kathite sati prāmāṇikānāṁ pravṛttau tadasaṁgatameveti manyamānaścodayati nanvityādinā | evaṁ manyate | yo hi prāmāṇikaḥ sa pramāṇe pravartate | na cādivākye prayojanādinā kathitena śāstraśravaṇātprāgvartate śāstraṁ ādivākyasyāprāmāṇyāt | aprāmāṇyaṁ cārthena sahāsaṁbandhācchabdasya | etairityabhidheyādibhiḥ | ārambhapradeśoktairiti prakaraṇasyaikadeśoktairādāvuktairityarthaḥ | ukteṣvityādi | evaṁ manyate | yadyasyāpramāṇaṁ prayojanapratipādakamādivacanaṁ tathāpi śāstrādau pratipādanīyaṁ arthasaṁśayajananārtham | yo hi samyagjñānārthī sa tathābhūta śāstrakarturādivākyaṁ śrutvā tatra saṁśete saṁśayācca pravartata iti tātparyam | ata eveti yata evādivākyenārthasaṁśayaḥ saṁśayācca pravṛttirata eva śāstrakāreṇaiva yujyate vaktuṁ nākhyānakartreti | tena yaduktaṁ kenacidyākhyānakārā eva prayojanādīni pratipādayiṣyantīti tatpratyuktam | utpaśyāma ityādinaitaddarśayati | yadyapi pramāṇaṁ nāsti mahatā prabandhane śāstrakaraṇātsaṁbhāvyata ityarthaḥ | nanu ca bādhakasādhakapramāṇābhāvātsamyagjñānavyutpattyathī vināpyādivacanena saṁśayānastatra pravartata iti kimādivākyena tatroktenetyāha anukteṣvityādi | evaṁ manyate | yo hyamūḍhastaṁ prati na kartavyameva | yo hi kākadattaparīkṣādiśāstraṁ dṛṣṭvā prayojanādirahitaṁ atrāpyaprayojanādīnsaṁbhāvayannanarthaṁ saṁśete anarthasaṁśayācca na pravartate taṁ pratyetatkathanasya prayojanam | kathite ca vacane śāstrakāreṇa tadanurodhādvacanādarthasaṁśayo jāyate tataḥ pravartata ityarthaḥ | anarthasaṁśayo yaiḥ kāraṇairbhavati tannidarśayati niṣprayojanamityādinā | ato vā prakaraṇadanyasya prakaraṇasya laghutaropāyatāṁ saṁbhāvyāsya prakaraṇasyāsāratayā anupāyatā syādityarthaḥ |
evaṁ samudāyena vākyasyaṁ tātparyaṁ vyākhyāyāvayavārthaṁ darśayitumāha avisaṁvādakamityādi | avisaṁvādakaṁ jñānaṁ samyagjñānamiti bruvatā ṭīkākṛtārthāvabodhakaṁ jñānaṁ mīmāṁsakaparikalpitamarthadarśanaṁ ca cārvākopakalpitamathāpi viparītaṁ jñānaṁ kaiścitparikalpitaṁ samyaktvena tannirastaṁ sarvaṁ eteṣāṁ samyagjñānalakṣaṇābhāvāt | yathā ca na tāni samyagjñānāni tathā svayaṁ ṭīkāyāmapahastitāni | ekasminnevārthe trayāṇāṁ jñānānāṁ pradarśakapravartakaprāpakabhedena prāmāṇyamiṣṭaṁ pareṇa | tannirākartumāha pradarśite cārtha ityādi | pradarśite cārtha prathamena darśakena jñānena yaddvitīyaṁ jñānaṁ tatraivārthe puruṣasya pravartakaṁ tṛtīyamapi tatraivārthe prāpakaṁ tato nādyādadhikaṁ prāpaṇayogyīkaraṇeneti tadeva pramāṇam | amumevārthaṁ samarthayati tathāhītyādinā | na janayannotpādayadarthaṁ svahetorevārthasyotpannatvāt | anena pravartakātprāpakasyābhedo darśitaḥ | pravartakasyāpi pradarśakādabhedaṁ darśayitumāha | yatpradarśakamādāvutpannamarthe jñānaṁ tadeva pravṛttiviṣayaṁ karoti pravṛttiviṣayayogyīkarotītyarthaḥ | na tu dvitīyaṁ jñānaṁ ādyenaiva pravṛttiviṣayayogyīkṛtatvāt | apiśabdaḥ pūrvāpekṣaḥ | ata evetyādinā ācāryagranthe svamataṁ saṁvādayati | kuto'yaṁ labhyate yadā prathamaṁ darśayatyeva na pravartayati na prāpayati | dvitīyamapi pravartayatyeva na prāpayati | evaṁ satyanyatpradarśakapramāṇaṁ anyatpravartanādikaphalam | na caivam | tasmādyuktamuktam | nanu ca yadyapyarthādhigatireva pramāṇaphalaṁ tathāpi yāvaduttare pravartakaprāpakajñāne na bhavatastatrārthe tāvanna pramāṇavyāpāraparisamāptirityāha adhigata ityādi | evaṁ manyate | adhigate cārthe samāptaḥ pramāṇavyāpāra iti tayoḥ prāmāṇye kartavye'nupayogitvam | ato'pramāṇe te | kathaṁ samāptaḥ pramāṇavyāpāraḥ ko vāsāvityāha | svavyāpāraḥ svaviṣayaniścayajanakatvaṁ nāma | sa ca niścayaḥ prathamayā cārthādhigatvā kṛta iti samāpto vyāpārastāvataiva puruṣasya pravṛtteḥ | ato dvitīyādīnāmatraivārthe'dhiko vyāpāro nāstīti | adhigatagantṛtvādaprāmāṇyamityarthaḥ | pravartitaḥ puruṣa iti pravartanayogyatvātpravartita ityucyate prāpaṇayogyatvātprāpitaḥ |evaṁ sāmānyena saṁvādakaṁ samyagjñānaṁ pratipādya viśeṣeṇa ca pratyakṣānumāṇe svavyāpāraṁ kurvatī samyagjñāne bhavata iti darśayannāha tatra yo'rtha ityādinā | tatra tayormadhye pratyakṣasya vyāpāraṁ darśayati | dṛṣṭatvena jñāto dṛṣṭatvena niścitaḥ | vikalpenānugamyata iti tatpṛṣṭhabhāvinā vikalpenāvasīyate | etaduktaṁ bhavati | pratibhāsamānārthavyavasāyaṁ kurvatpratyakṣaṁ pramāṇaṁ saṁvādakamityarthaḥ | anumānaṁ tvityādinā anumānasya pravṛttiviṣayaṁ darśayati | liṅgadarśanaṁ liṅgajñānam | tacca vahnyavyabhicāridhūmaniścayanaṁ sāmanyena sādhyāvinābhāvi ca smaraṇajñānam | yathā dhūmaṁ pratyakṣeṇa gṛhītvā sarvatrāyaṁ vahnija iti smaraṇaṁ tasmātliṅgajñānānniścinvatpravṛttiviṣayaṁ darśayati | tadanumānaṁ viśiṣṭasaṁbandhena yadudeti jñānaṁ yathātratyo dhūmo vahnija iti jñānam | etaduktaṁ bhavati | pratyakṣasya svaviṣayaniścayajananavyāpāro'bhinnaḥ | anumānasya tu liṅgadarśanātsvaviṣaye niścayātmanotpattireva niścayavyāpāra iti | tathā cetyādinā anayordarśitaṁ vyāpāraṁ spaṣṭayati | ata ete pramāṇe | nānyadvijñānamityevaṁ bruvataite eva samyagjñāne nānyāni śabdādīni teṣāṁ niyatārthānupadarśakatvāditi samyagjñānasya pravṛttiḥ darśitā | yathaite pramāṇe saṁśayādijñānaṁ na tathā pramāṇam | prāptuṁ śakyamityādinā darśayati | etaduktaṁ bhavati | yathā pratyakṣānumāne svena svena pramāṇenopadarśitārthasya prāpake na tathā saṁśayaviparyayajñāne tathābhūtasyārthasyābhāvāditi |
nanu ca mā bhūtsaṁśayaviparyayajñānayoḥ prāmāṇyaṁ tathābhūtasyārthasyāsattvāditi yatpunariha kūpe jalamiti jñānaṁ tatpramāṇāntaraṁ kimiti na bhavati na tāvatpratyakṣaṁ tatra jalasya parokṣatvāt | nāpyanumānaṁ liṅgābhāvāt | nāpi saṁśayanūpaṁ ubhayāṁśābhāvāt | nāpi viparītaṁ viparītārthābhāvāt | ityāśaṅkyāha sarveṇa cāliṅgajenetyādi | evaṁ manyate | yadyapi sākṣātsaṁśayajñānaṁ na pratīyate yastu saṁśayaḥ vikalpakasya jñānasya iha kūpe jalamityevaṁjātīyasya tathāpi niyāmakaṁ liṅgamattareṇa tadapramāṇaṁ niyatārthaparicchedāt | tataścāyamarthaḥ syātkadācitkūpe jalamiti yaccaivaṁnūpaṁ tatsaṁśayajñānamevetyapramāṇam | yatpunastatra pravṛttena kadācijjalaṁ labhyate tajjñānāntarāditi viniścayaṭīkāyāṁ pratipāditam | nanu ca yadyapi saṁśayādīnāmupadarśitārthasya prāpakatvaṁ nāsti kiṁ tāni na vyutpādyanta ityāha arthakriyārthibhiścetyādi | puruṣārthasiddhāvanupayogādityabhiprāyaḥ | nanu ca yadyupadarśitārthaprāpaṇātpramāṇaṁ samyagjñānaṁ śuklaśaṅkhe pītajñānaṁ kuñcikāvivare maṇiprabhāyāṁ maṇijñānaṁ ardharātre madhyāhnakālavastugrāhi svaprajñānaṁ ca pramāṇaṁ prāpnotītyebhirupadarśitasyārthamātrasya prāptestataśca samyagjñānamityāśaṅkyāha arthādhigamātmakaṁ hītyādi | evaṁ manyate | ebhirupadarśitasyārthasya pītākārasya kuñcikāvivarasthasya maṇerniyatadeśasya niyatakālasya cārdharātre'prāpaṇāt deśakālavyatiriktasyāvayavāderabhāvāt ata eva tānyapramāṇānyeva na samyagjñānānīti | yadapyetānyabhrāntagrahaṇasya vyāvartyāni tatraivābhrāntagrahaṇaprastāve darśayitavyāni tathāpoha samyagjñānavyāvartyaprastāvātkathitānītyadoṣaḥ | nanu cetyādi | evaṁ manyate codakaḥ | deśākārābhyāṁ niyatasya prāptuṁ śakyatvādbhavatvanyākārasyānyadeśasya ca prāptāvapramāṇam | na tvanyakālasya niyatakālasya cāprāpteḥ kṣaṇikatvādbhāvānām | tataśca yathā satyanīle nīlajñānasyānyo grāhyakālo'nyaśca prāpyakālaḥ atha kālabhede'pi prāmāṇyaṁ tathā svaprajñānasyārdharātropadarśitamadhyāhnakālaputraprāpaṇasya prāmāṇyaṁ bhaviṣyatīti | nocyata ityādinā siddhāntavādī tvevaṁ manyate | satyaṁ kṣaṇabhedena vastuno bhedo'styeva kiṁ tu kṣaṇāpekṣayā na prāmāṇyalakṣaṇamucyate api tu saṁtānāpekṣayā | tataśca nīlādau ya eva saṁtānaḥ paricchinno nīlajñānena sa eva tena prāpitaḥ | tena pramāṇaṁ nīlajñānam | na tathā sthūlakālabhedena pradarśitasya putrasya svaprajñānam | na prāptikālabhedena saṁtānaikyādhyavasāyāyogāt | saṁtānagatamekatvaṁ draṣṭavyamityanena niścayapravṛttyorhetuhetumadbhāvaṁ darśayati | sa ca hetuhetumadbhāvaḥ kathaṁ bhavati yadi saṁtānāpekṣayā prāmāṇyamavatiṣṭhate na kṣaṇāpekṣayeti |
samyagjñānaṁ pūrvaṁ kāraṇaṁ yasyāḥ | kathaṁ pūrvaśabdaḥ kāraṇe vartata ityāha kāryādityādi | kāraṇaśabda eva kasmānna kṛta ityāha kāraṇaśabda ityādi | kimanantarakāraṇaṁ jñānaṁ saṁbhavati yadapekṣayā vyavahitasya grahaṇārthaṁ pūrvaśabdagrahaṇaṁ kṛtamityāha dvividhamityādi nanu kimucyate arthakriyānirbhāsaṁ jñānamanantaraṁ kāraṇaṁ naṁ hi tatkāraṇajñānaṁ kiṁ tarhi phalajñānam | evaṁ tu yujyate vaktuṁ yatsādhananirbhāsyanantaraṁ jñānamarthakriyānirbhāsajñānamupajanayati tatsādhanajñānamanantarakāraṇamityucyate | tadevātrābhipretamarthakriyānirbhāsaśabdena | kathaṁ | arthakriyā yā nirbhāsaḥ pratibimbanaṁ tadākārajñānotpattiryasmādanantarajñānāttatsādhanajñānaṁ tadarthakriyānirbhāsaṁ sādhanajñānam | evamatrāpi samāsaḥ kartavyaḥ | athavārthakriyājñānamevānantarakāraṇaṁ tatprāpitaheyopādeyānuṣṭhānavyavahārapekṣayā pravartakamiti vyavahitaṁ sādhananirbhāsajñānam | yadyevamanantarameva kimiti na parīkṣyata ityāha yatraiva hītyādi | yatraiva jñāne'rthakriyāsamarthavastupravartake puruṣasya saṁdehastadeva parīkṣyate na cānattarasādhanajñāne saṁdehastadanattaraṁ sukhaduḥkhapratibhāsajñānodayāt | tayoranubhave sati sādhanajñānātpravartituṁ vā yujyata iti na parīkṣāhaṁ yadvārthakriyānirbhāsasyānayā yuktyā na parīkṣārhatvamiti |
arthyata ityādi | artha yacñāyāmityasya karmaṇi ghañ | aryata ityapi draṣṭavyam | upalakṣaṇārthatvādasyārterauṇādikaḥsthanpratyayaḥ | heyortha ityādinā vinītadevasya vyākhyā dūṣitā | tena hyevaṁ vyākhyātaṁ arthaśabdena prayojanamucyate puruṣasya prayojanaṁ dārupākādi | tasya siddhirniṣpattiriti | taccāyuktaṁ yasmādarthasya dārupākāderna samyagjñānānniṣpattiḥ | kiṁ tarhi svahetoreva vajrapādeḥ | dharmottaravyākhyāne tu heyopādeyārthaviṣayā yā siddhiranuṣṭhitiḥ sā samyagjñānapūrviketi na doṣaḥ | amumevārthaṁ darśayiṣyati heyasya ca hānamanuṣṭhānam | nanu ca heyopādeyābhyāmanyo'pyupekṣaṇīya asti | tasya kimiti na kathanamityāha na ca heyetyādi |evaṁ manyate | satyaṁ | asti | kiṁ tu tasyānupādeyatvādveyatvameveti na pṛthakkathanam | tena yaduktaṁ kaiścidveyopādeyayoḥ puruṣārthopayogitvātkathanaṁ upekṣaṇīyasya tadviparyayānna kathanamiti tatpratyuktam | amumevārthaṁ vyācaṣṭe | uttareṇa granthena sarvaśabda ityādinā ṭīkākṛtāṁ vyākhyāṁ dūṣayati | vinītadevaśāntabhadrābhyāmevamāśaṅkā vyākhyātam | kathamāśaṅkitam | na tu sarvā hānopādānārthasiddhiḥ samyagjñānādevāpi tu mithyājñānādapi kākatālīyetyāśaṅkā parihṛtam | satyaṁ asti | kiṁ tvevaṁ vyākhyāyate |sarvaśabdo'yaṁ prakāravācī | tenāyamarthaḥ sarvapuruṣārthasiddhiḥ dviprakārā hānopādānārthasiddhilakṣaṇā | laukikalokottarārthasiddhilakṣaṇā samyagjñānanibandhanā bāhulyeneti | taddūṣitam | yasmātsarvaśabdo'tra draṣṭavyaḥ kārtsnye vartate sarvaṁ brahmaṇā sṛṣṭamiti | tenāyamarthaḥ yāvatī kṛtsnārthasiddhirhānopādānalakṣaṇā sarvā samyagjñānādeva na mithyājñānāt mithyājñānādarthaprāptyasiddheriti | amumevārthamanantareṇa granthena darśayati | dviprakārāpītyādinā paravyākhyāṁ darśayati api tvayamartha ityādinātmīṣāṁ vyākhyām | tato yāvadbrūyādi tyādinopasaṁhāravyājenaivaśabdena prayuktenāvadhāraṇārthavācinā yāvānarthastāvāneva sarvaśabdena prayuktena kṛtsnārthavācinā bhavatīti darśayati | nanu bahuvrīhiṇā puruṣārthasiddhirucyate tasyāḥ prādhānyāttacchabdena saṁbandho yukto na samyagjñānasyetyāha yadyapītyādi | evaṁ manyate | śabdārtho hi dvividhaḥ śābdaḥ pratipādyaśca | śābdāpekṣayā codyaṁ pratipādyāpekṣayā parihṛtam | samyagjñānasyaiva vyutpādyatayā prastutatvāditarasyāḥ siddhestadviparyayāditi | nanu ca kimidaṁ jñānasya vyutpādanaṁ kiṁ jñānasyotpādanamuta doṣāpanayanamatha svanūpakathanamiti | na tāvadutpādanamanena prakaraṇena kriyate svahetorevotpatteḥ | nāpi doṣāpanayanam | na hyanena prakaraṇena doṣo'panetuṁ śakyate akārakatvādasya nāpi jñāpayitumavidyamānatvāddoṣasya | nāpi svanūpakathanaṁ yujyate niṣprayojanatvātprakaraṇasyetyāśaṅkyāha vyutpādyata iti vipratipattinirākaraṇeneti | evaṁ manyate | vipratipattinirākaraṇadvāreṇa samyagjñānasvanūpaṁ jñāpyate'nena prakaraṇeneti | vakṣyamāṇalakṣaṇayuktaṁ samyagjñānaṁ nānyalakṣaṇayuktamiti svanūpakathanam | tāmeva vipratipattiṁ krameṇa darśayati catuḥprakārā saṁkhyālakṣaṇetyādinā | tathetyādinā saṁkhyāvipratipattinirākaraṇaṁ darśayati | anekaprakārā punaḥ samyagjñānasya vipratipattiḥ | tathā hi mīmāṁsakāḥ pratyakṣānumānaśabdopamānārthāpattyabhāvalakṣaṇaṁ padavyākhyāyuktaṁ samyagjñānaṁ manyatte | naiyāyikāścatuḥsaṁkhyāyuktaṁ pratyakṣānumānaśabdopamānalakṣaṇaṁ manyatte | cārvākāstu kecitpratyakṣamevaikamiti | tannirāsena darśayati dvividhamiti | nanu ca samyagjñānasya lakṣaṇe kathite sati paścāttadbhedaḥ pradarśayituṁ yujyate itthaṁbhūtalakṣaṇaṁ samyagjñānaṁ dvividhamiti tatkimityādāveva pradarśitamityāha vyaktibhede cetyādi | evaṁ manyate | satyamevameva kiṁ tatra saṁkhyābhede'kathite samyagjñānasya lakṣaṇameva na śakyate kathayituṁ yataḥ pratyakṣasyānyatlakṣaṇamanumānasya cānyat | saṁkhyābhede tu kathite lakṣaṇaṁ pratiniyataṁ śakyate kathayitumityato lakṣaṇāṅgamevādau saṁkhyābhedakathanamiti | nanu ca pratyakṣamanumānaṁ ceti nirdeśāddvividhamiti labdham | kimarthaṁ dvividhagrahaṇam | ucyate | dvividhameva samyagjñānamityavadhāraṇārthaṁ tenaikatricaturā saṁkhyā nirastā syāt | asati dvitvakathane pratyakṣānumāne tāvatsaṁbhavato'nyānyapi pramāṇāni bhaviṣyattīti syādāśaṅkā | pratigatamakṣamityādinā gatisamāsaṁ darśayati | akṣamakṣaṁ prati pratyakṣamityavyayībhāvasamāsaḥ kasmānna pradarśyate'yaṁ samāsaḥ | yato'vyayībhāvaścennapuṁsakaliṅgatā syātpratyakṣasya | tataśca pratyakṣā buddhiḥ pratyakṣo ghaṭa iti na syāt | idameva syātpratyakṣaṁ jñānaṁ pratyakṣaṁ kuṇḍaṁ ceti | gatisamāse tu sarvaliṅgatā bhavati | nanu ca pratigatamakṣamityasyāṁ vyutpattāvakṣāśritasyaivendriyajñānasya pratyakṣaśabdavācyatā syāt na yogijñānādeiḥ teṣāmakṣānāśrayādityāśaṅkyāha akṣāśritatvaṁ cetyādi | ekārthasamavetamityekasminnindriyajñāne samavetamakṣāśritatvamarthasākṣātkāritvaṁ ca saṁbaddhamityarthaḥ | sānūpyalakṣaṇāmi tyanenārthasānūpyalakṣitaṁ jñānamevocyate | tanna sānūpyamātram | anyathā vinūpātliṅgādanumeye jñānamiti virudhyate | atrāpi paścānmānamanumānami tyavyapībhāvasamāse pūrvavajrodyamudrāvya gatisamāsa āśrayitavyaḥ | anugataṁ mānamanumānamiti paścādityarthakathanaṁ kṛtaṁ na tasminvākye samāsaḥ |
cakāraḥ pratyakṣānumānayostulyabalatvaṁ samuccinotītyādinā yaduktaṁ śabarasvāmiprabhṛtibhiḥ pratyakṣaṁ śreṣṭhaṁ pramāṇaṁ nānumānaṁ tathā coktaṁ mīmāṁsabhāṣye pratyakṣe balīyasi kathamanumānamiti tatpratyuktaṁ yato dvayorapi svavyāpāre tulyabalatvam | amumevārthaṁ darśayati | yathāthīvinābhāvetyādinā | anena vinītadevaśāttabhadrayorvyākhyā ca dūṣitā | tābhyāmevaṁ vyākhyātaṁ pratyakṣamanumāna ceti bhinnavibhaktinirdeśo 'rthādviṣayabhedaṁ darśayati | yathānayorvibhaktirbhinnā evaṁ viṣayo 'pi bhinna iti | etaccāyuktaṁ yasmādekavibhaktinirdeśe kriyāmāṇe cakāreṇa tulyabalatvaṁ na pradarśitaṁ syāditi | pratyakṣatvajātyeti pratyakṣāṇāṁ bahutvāt tajjātyā nirdhāryate |
pratyakṣamanūdyeti lakṣyanirdeśaḥ | kalpanāpoḍhatvamabhrāntatvaṁ na vidhīyata iti lakṣaṇanirdeśaḥ | anena lakṣyalakṣaṇabhāvaṁ darśayatā vinītadevavyākhyānaṁ saṁjñāsaṁjñisaṁbandhanūpaṁ pratyuktam | na hi saṁjñā yathārthaṁ saṁbhavati | yathārthakathanena hi vipratipattirnirākṛtā syāt | yadyapyanvarthasaṁjñayā kalpanāpoḍhaṁ yadbhrāntaṁ ca tatpratyakṣamiti śakyate yathārthaṁ kathayituṁ tathāpi na svanūpaṁ pratyakṣasya kathitaṁ syāt yato'nyadapi pratyakṣasya svanūpamarthasākṣātkārādikamastīti lakṣyalakṣaṇe tu yathārthaṁ kathite kathitaṁ bhavati | yatkiṁcitpratyakṣaṁ tatkalpanāpoḍhābhrāntamiti pratipattavyam | ata eva na lakṣaṇakaraṇaṁ saṁjñākaraṇaṁ bhavati saṁjñākaraṇatvenāpratīterlakṣaṇakaraṇasya | śabdamanūdyānityatvaṁ lakṣaṇaṁ vidhīyate na cānityatvaṁ saṁjñeti gamyata iti saṁjñālakṣaṇakaraṇayorbhedaḥ | yastvanayoḥ pradeśāntaraprasiddhayoranuvādaṁ kṛtvā pratyakṣatvaṁ vidadhāti tenāpyatra lakṣyalakṣaṇabhāvo viparītamākhyātaṁ bhaṅgyā yato lakṣaṇavidhānakāle lakṣyamanūdya lakṣaṇaṁ vidhīyate na tu lakṣaṇamanūdya lakṣyaṁ vidhīyate | siddhe tu lakṣyalakṣaṇabhāve sati lakṣaṇamanūdya lakṣyaṁ vidhīyate yathā yaḥ śikhāvānsa parivrājaka iti | śikhālakṣaṇavidhānakāle tu parivrājakānuvādena śikhaiva vidhīyate na viparītavidhānamityanyadapyasminyakṣe dūṣaṇaṁ dattaṁ viniścayaṭīkāyāṁ ṭīkākṛteti tatraiva draṣṭavyam | nanu ca lakṣaṇavidhipakṣe pratyakṣasyādyāpyasiddhatvādanūdyaṁ na saṁbhavati tataśca kathaṁ pratyakṣalakṣyamanūdya lakṣaṇaṁ vijñāpyate | yathā śikhayā prarivrājaka ityitra śikhālakṣaṇamanūdya kalpanāpoḍhādi vidhīyata ityāśaṅkyāha yattadbhavatāmityādi |evaṁ manyate | yadyapi kalpanāpoḍhatvena pratyakṣaṁ na prasiddhaṁ tathāpyarthasākṣātkāritvena sāmānyaṁ pratyakṣaṁ prasiddham | ato'pyucyate pratyakṣamanūdyeti | nanu ca tayoraprasiddhatvātpratyakṣasyāprasiddhireva pratyakṣasya tatsvabhāvatvādityāśaṅkyāha na caitanmantavyamityādi subodham | kalpanāsvabhāvarahitamiti bhāvapradhāno nirdeśaḥ | kalpanātvasvabhāvarahitamityarthaḥ | abhrāntamarthakriyākṣame na vastunūpa ityādināvisaṁvādo'rtho'bhrāntaśabdasya na saṁbhavatīti darśayati | avisaṁvādārthe'bhrāntaśabde gṛhyamāṇa uttaratradūṣaṇaṁ pratipādayati | sanniveśopādhivarṇātmakamityanenaitaddarśayati | varṇādanyatsaṁsthānādikaṁ paraparikalpitaṁ nāstīti | etacca lakṣaṇadvayamityādinā padadvayena vipratipattinirāsaṁ darśayatā vinītadevavyākhyā padadvayavyavacchedakathananūpā dūṣitā | tena tvevaṁ vyākhyātam | abhrāntamiti yadvisaṁvādi na bhavati | evaṁ satyanumānasyāpi pratyakṣalakṣaṇaṁ prāpnotīti kalpanāpoḍhagrahaṇaṁ tannivṛttyartham | yadyevaṁ vyākhyāyate ālambane yanna bhrāntaṁ tadabhrāntamityevamucyamāne sarvaṁ pratyakṣaṁ jñānamālambane bhrāntamiti na kasyacitpratyakṣatvaṁ syāt | tathā cāha |

na tadapyatrācāryeṇa saṁgṛhītamiti tadayuktaṁ yata ācāryeṇa vipratipattinirāsārthaṁ padadvayaṁ kṛtaṁ na vyavacchedārtham | ata evācāryamanumāpayatā dharmottareṇa padadvayaṁ vyākhyātamiti | nanu ca bhavataḥ pakṣe'pi kimiti vyavacchedārthaṁ na bhavatītyāha etaccetyādi | evaṁ manyate | bhrāntaśabdo'yaṁ nāvisaṁvādārtho gṛhyate | api tvarthakriyākṣame vastunūpa ālambane yanna bhrāmyati tadabhrāntaśabdena gṛhyate | nanūktaṁ yogācāramatamasaṁgṛhītaṁ syāditi | ucyate | bāhyānayena sautrāttika matānusāreṇācāryeṇa lakṣaṇaṁ kṛtamityadoṣaḥ | yogācāramatena tvabhrāntagrahaṇaṁ na kartavyaṁ saṁvādakasya samyagjñānasya prastutatvāt anyavyāvartyasyābhāvāt | tasmādabhrāntagrahaṇenānumāne niraste kalpanāpoḍhagrahaṇāmadhikaṁ siddhivipratipattiṁ nirākaroti | ata evāha na tvanumānanivṛttyarthamiti | asti cātra vipratipattiḥ | tathāhi mīmāṁsakādaya evamāhuḥ | yathā nirvikalpakaṁ jñānaṁ samyagjñānaṁ tathā jātyādiyojanājñānamapi samyagjñānamindriyajaṁ upadarśitasyārthasya prāpaṇāt | tathā cāhuḥ |
tataḥ paraṁ punarvastudharmairjātyādibhiryayā |
buddhyāvasīyate sāpi pratyakṣatvena saṁmateti ||
tathā ca vaiyākaraṇā āhuḥ | vācakasaṁsṛṣṭaṁ vācyamindriyajñāne pratibhāsate | tena śabdasaṁyojanātmakamiti |
vāyūpatā cedutkrāmedavabodhasya śāśvatī |
na prakāśaḥ prakāśena sā hi pratyavamarśinī ||
na so'sti pratyayo loke yaḥ śabdānugamādṛte |
anuviddhamiva jñānaṁ sarvaṁ śabdena bhāsate ||
tathā naiyāyikādīnāṁ savikalpakaṁ pratyakṣamiti kalpanāpoḍhagrahaṇena nirākriyate | tathā kalpanāpoḍhagrahaṇena nirvikalpake siddhe'bhrāntagrahaṇamatiricyamānaṁ dvicandrajñānādeḥ samyagjñānādhikaraṇa evaṁ nirastatvādvipratipattinirāsārthatvameva bhavati | tathācāryaikadeśīyāḥ śukle śaṅkhe pītajñānaṁ gacchadvṛkṣadarśanajñānaṁ cālātacakrajñānamabhrāntamapi samyagjñānamicchanti vastuno'bhrāntatvātpītākārādeśca bhrāntatvādityasti vipratipattiḥ | tannirākriyate'bhrāntagrahaṇeneti sthitaṁ dvayorapi vipratipattinirāsārthatvamiti | tathā sati abhrāntagrahaṇa ityādinābhrāntaśabdasya vipratipattiviṣayaṁ darśayati | na tato vṛkṣāvāptirityupadarśitasya gacchadvṛkṣasyāprāpterityabhiprāyaḥ | jñānāntarādeva tviti pratyakṣāntarātsthiravṛkṣasya prāpteḥ | tathābhrāntagrahaṇenetyādinā kalpanāpoḍhagrahaṇasya vipratipattinirāsārthatvaṁ darśayati | vipratipattiviṣayaśca ṭīkākṛtā na darśito'tiprasiddhatvāt | yaduktaṁ prāg nāvisaṁvādārtho'bhrāntārtha iti tasyārthasya grahaṇe doṣaṁ darśayati na tvavisaṁvādakamityādinā |
kīdṛśī punaḥ kalpanetyādinā kalpanābahutvātkasyāḥ kalpanāyāḥ grahaṇamiti kalpanāviśeṣamajñānanpṛcchati | tathā hi vaibhāṣikā indriyavijñānaṁ vitarkavicāracaitasikasaṁprayuktaṁ kalpanāmicchanti | yogācāramatena ca tathāgatajñānamadvayaṁ muktvā sarvajñānaṁ grāhyagrāhakatvena vikalpitaṁ kalpanā | jātyādisaṁsṛṣṭaṁ tu manojñānaṁ kalpanetyanye kathayanti | abhilāpetyādinā śabdasaṁsṛṣṭasya vikalpasya grahaṇaṁ nāgamaparipaṭhitānāmiti darśayati | teṣāṁ grahaṇe satīndriyavijñānasya pratyakṣatvānupapatteḥ | abhilapyata aneneti karaṇasādhanenaitaddarśayati | vācako'bhilāpaśabdeneṣṭo na tu vācyaṁ sāmānyādi | tena vinītadevavyākhyā dūṣitā abhilapyata ityabhilāpaḥ vācyaḥ sāmānyādirityevaṁnūpā | evamevedamāśrayaṇīyamanyathā yogyagrahaṇena śabdasaṁsargayogyo na kathitaḥ syāditi | yadyevaṁ dharmottaravyākhyāne jātyādervācyasya saṁsargabhāvo na pradarśitaḥ syāt |satyaṁ anena na pratipāditaḥ |viṣayacintāyāṁ sāmānyāderviṣayabhāvakathanena sāmarthyātkathitaṁ bhavatīti nirodhaḥ | ekasmiñjñāne vācyavācakākāratayā saṁghaṭanamityarthaḥ | nanu ca yadyapi tasmiñjñāna ākārayormīlanaṁ tathāpi śabdārthayoḥ saṁsargo nāstītyāha | tato yadaikasminnityādi | śabdārthayoḥ saṁsargavijñāne'pi tayorākārayormīlanaṁ na saṁbhavatītyabhiprāyaḥ | tatra kācitpratītirityādinā yogyagrahaṇasya viṣayaṁ darśayati | vyutpannasaṁketāpekṣayākāradvayapratibhāsanam | nanu cāvyutpannasaṁketasya bālamūkāderanumato vijñāne na śabdasaṁsarga iti tadyotyatvamapi nāsti | kaśca saṁsargayogyapratibhāsaḥ ya śabdapratibhāsaḥ | mūkādijñāne tu saṁketābhāve sati śabdapratibhāso'pi na saṁbhavatīti saṁsargayogyatvamapi nāsti | kimidaṁ yogyatvaṁ nāma abhidheyākārasya saṁketakaraṇayogyatvam | na cābhidhānotlekhābhāve satyabhidheyapratibhāsanaṁ nāpi yogyatvamiti | tathā cakumārilaḥ prāha |
asti hyālocanātmakaṁ prathamaṁ nirvikalpakaṁ |
bālamūkādivijñānasadṛśaṁ śuddhavastujamiti ||
tataśca vyāvartyābhāvādyogyagrahaṇaṁ na kartavyamityāśaṅkāṁ parasya darśayati asatyabhilāpetyadinā | aniyatapratibhāsetyādinottaramāha | evaṁ manyate | śabdasaṁsargitva kimucyate vikalpajñānasyāniyatapratibhāsatvameva | kutastatsiddhamityāha aniyatetyādi | arthādeva hyutpadyamānaṁ niyatapratibhāsaṁ bhavati | tathā cakṣurvijñānamityabhiprāyaḥ | nanu kalpanājñānamapyarthādutpadyamānaṁ niyatākāraṁ bhaviṣyatītyāha vikalpajñānetyādi | arthasaṁnidhi vinā vikalpajñānasyotpattirityabhiprāyaḥ tenendriyajñānameva niyatapratibhāsam | vikalpajñānaṁ tvaniyatapratibhāsamiti | tathāniyatapratibhāsaṁ vikalpajñānaṁ bālamūkāderapyastīti darśayati bālo'pi hītyādinā | nanu ca bālasya tālvādikaraṇapāṭavābhāve sāmānyaviśeṣaśabdoccāraṇaṁ nāsti tatkimucyate sa evāyamiti | satyaṁ nāsti kiṁ tu sa evāyamityanena vikalpasyāvasthocyate | sa evāyamityanena pūrvadṛṣṭatvamevocyate | uparatarudito'pagataruditaḥ | etaddarśayati | bālasyāpi pūrvāparaparāmarśanūpaṁ vikalpakaṁ vijñānamasti niyataviṣaye pravṛtteḥ yathā gṛhītasaṁketasya pūrvāparaparāmarśena pravṛttiriti | yacca pūrvāparaparāmarśaṁ,tadaniyatapratibhāsaṁ pūrvāparayorāropitatvāditi saṁsargayogyaṁ bālamūkādervijñānamiti tannivṛttyartha yogyagrahaṇaṁ kartavyamiti sthitam | indriyavijñānamityādinā kumārilena yadindriyavijñānasyālocanākhyasya bālamūkādivijñānena sādṛśyaṁ pratipāditaṁ taddūṣayitumupasaṁhāravyājena vailakṣaṇyaṁ darśayati | ata evetyādi yadindriyavijñānamarthabalenotpadyamānaṁ niyatapratibhāsaṁ tannirvikalpakam | ata eva svalakṣaṇasyāpi śabdasyārthasya ca vācyavācakatvamabhyupagamya nirvikalpakatvamindriyavijñānasya sādhyate | vikalpavijñānasya tu svalakṣaṇavācyavācakatvaṁ pratibhāsino'pi savikalpakatvamiti sthitam | yadyapītyanena svalakṣaṇayorvācyavācakabhāvābhyupagamaṁ darśayati paramārthataḥ sāmānyayoreva vācyavācakatvaṁ nārthaśabdaviśeṣasyetyādinā nyāyena | avaśyaṁ ca svalakṣaṇayoḥ vācyavācakabhāvo'bhyupagamyaḥ | kutaḥ | sāmānyayorviṣayacintāyāmeva nirasyamānatvāditi nirvikalpakatvakathanaṁ vyarthaṁ syādiha | tadapi hi viṣayāviṣayacintādvāreṇa nirvikalpakaviṣayameveti | tena yadvinītadevena sāmānyayorvāghyavācakabhāvamaṅgīkṛtya nirvikalpakatvamindriyavijñānasya pratipāditaṁ taddūṣitaṁ bhaṅgyā | śrotravijñānaṁ tarhītyādinā svalakṣaṇasya vācyavācakabhāvapakṣe'tiprasaṅgamāpādayati paraḥ | kiṁcinnirvikalpakatvamindriyavijñānasya sādhanīyam| na sāmānyayorvācyavācakamabhyupagamya śabdasvalakṣaṇaṁ vācyam | yadā ghaṭaśabdaḥ śabdaśabdo vā śabdaṁ śabdena pratipadyate tadā kiṁcidvācyaṁ śabdasvalakṣaṇaṁ kiṁcidvācakaṁ śabdasvalakṣaṇamiti | tataḥ śruddhayoḥ śravaṇe sati śabdavijñāne dvayorapi śabdayoḥ pratibhāsanācchrotrendriyajñānamaniyatapratibhāsitvātsavikalpakaṁ syādityākūtam | satyapītyādi |evaṁ manyate | yadyapi svalakṣaṇayorvācyavācakatvaṁ tathāpi śrotravijñāne na vācyavācakatayā tayoḥ pratibhāsanaṁ api tu śuddhayoreva pratibhāsanaṁ yasmācchabdasaṁnidhibalena śrotravijñānamutpadyate | na ca saṁnihitayoḥ śabdayoḥ vācyavācakatvamasti | yāvatsaṁketakālabhāviśabdasmaraṇaṁ na bhavati tāvatkuto vācyatvaṁ vācakatvaṁ vā syāt etatpratyabhijñayā sa evāyaṁ vācako bhaviṣyatītyāha | na ca saṁketakāletyādi | viṣayabhedāttayoḥ pūrvottarayorbhedaḥ | kaśca saṁketaviṣayaḥ śabdo yaḥ saṁketakālabhāvinā jñānena viṣayīkṛtaḥ | yaśca pūrvajñānena viṣayīkṛtaḥ sa idānīṁ nāsti pūrvajñānavināśe pūrvajñānaviṣayatvasyābhāvāt | ataḥ pūrvakālaviṣayatvamapaśyatsannihite śrotrabalenotpadyamānaṁ nirvikalpakameva | yogijñānena yadyekasminkāle manovijñānena ca yugapacchandārthau gṛhīte tathāpi saṁnihitavastutayā tena gṛhītavyāviti darśayati | yogijñānamityādinā | nanu kalpanājñānamapi parayā kalpanayā śūnyaṁ tataśca tasyāpi nirvikalpakatvaṁ prāpnotītyāśaṅkyāha | tayā kalpanayā kalpanāsvabhāvenetyādi | evaṁ manyate | dharmiṇā kalpanājñānena dharmo'tra kalpanātvaṁ lakṣyate yathā viṣāṇītyatra viṣāṇitvaṁ tataśca kalpanātvena rahitaṁ yajjñānaṁ tannirvikalpakam | na ca kalpanājñānaṁ kalpanātvarahitamityadoṣaḥ |
kalpanāpoḍhābhrāntatvayorlakṣaṇayoḥ parasparaviśeṣaṇaviśeṣyatvaṁ na svātantryeṇa pṛthaglakṣaṇatvamiti darśayitumante pratyakṣaśabdaṁ gṛhītvā tayorapi saṁbadhnāti tatpratyakṣamiti pareṇa saṁbandha ityanena | indriyagatamidaṁ vibhramakāraṇamitīndriyasya timireṇākrāntatvāt | āśubhramaṇamiti | mandaṁ bhramyamāṇa iti viśeṣaṇasya vyāvṛttiḥ | viṣayagatamiti viṣayasyālātādeścakrākāraṁ prati nimittatvāt | nauyānamiti samudāyapraśnaḥ | gacchatyāṁ nāvītyādinā | prayojanaṁ darśayati | bāhyāśrayagatamiti | bāhyā nauḥ sevāśrayastatra sthitasyāśrayadvārako vibhrama ucyate | saṁkṣobho vātādīnāṁ vikārāpattiradhyātmikavibhramakāraṇam | nanu cendriyagatameva vibhramakāraṇam | pratyucyate| nānyairindriyamagatairindriyaṁ vikriyāṁ gatamityāha sarvairevetyādi timirasya sākṣādalātādeḥ pāramparyeṇeti etacca viniścayaṭīkāyāṁ vistareṇa pratipāditamiti | saṁkṣobhapadena saha dvandvaṁ kṛtvā bahuvrīhiriti darśayati viniścaye tu saṁkṣobhaśabdena ṣaṣṭhīsamāsaṁ kṛtvādiśabdena bahuvrīhisamāsa darśayataḥ ko'bhiprāyaḥ ṭīkākṛta iti | vyutpattibhedakathanameva nārthabheda iti | yadā saṁkṣobhaśabdena ṣaṣṭhī samāsaḥ tadāśrayagatasya vibhramakāraṇasyopalakṣaṇatvādvātapittādergrahaṇaṁ bhavatīti nārthabhedaḥ | atha kimarthamāśubhramaṇagrahaṇāderupādānaṁ timirādītyeva kriyatāmādigrahaṇena sarveṣāṁ saṁgraho bhaviṣyati | ucyate | asatyāśubhramaṇādigrahaṇa indriyagatamevādiśabdena kācakāmalādi gṛhyata ityāśaṅkyeta | tasmādāśubhramaṇādirupādīyate | teṣāmupādāne padyādigrahaṇaṁ na kriyeta tadā teṣāṁ svanūpagrahaṇameva syāt | na prakāropalakṣaṇamityādigrahaṇam | tata ubhayopādāne sati timirādīnāmubhayakātsyarna labhyata iti sthitam | tat tathāvidhaṁ jñānamiti yadyapi sūtre jñānagrahaṇaṁ nāsti tathāpi bhrānte jñānadharmatvāttadyudāsena jñānameva pratyakṣaṁ gṛhyata ityadoṣaḥ | vinītadevavyākhyāyāṁ bhavati tu pratyakṣasūtrasyārthakathanaṁ jñānaṁ pratyakṣamiti tasmātsthitaṁ nirvikalpakaṁ jñānaṁ pratyakṣabhrāntamiti ||
yairindriyameva draṣṭu parikalpitamiti | vaibhāṣikaiḥ cakṣuḥ paśyati nūpāṇīti tairiṣyate| mānase ca pratyakṣe doṣa udbhāvita iti dvābhyāṁ bhikṣavo nūpaṁ dṛśyate cakṣurvijñānena tadākṛṣṭena manovijñāneneti tadāgamasiddhaṁ manovijñānamācāryadignāgena pratyakṣaṁ darśitaṁ tatparaiḥ kumārilādibhirlakṣaṇamajñānadbhirdūṣitam | tanmanojñānaṁ yadīndriyavijñānaviṣaye pravartate tadā gṛhītagrāhitayāpramāṇaṁ athānyaviṣaye pravartate vyavahite pratyakṣaṁ bhavatkiṁ tanmanovijñānamindriyasavyapekṣaṁ syānnirāpekṣaṁ vā | indriyasavyapekṣatve satīndiyavijñānameva nirāpekṣatve vānindriyasyāpi manovijñānaṁ pratyakṣaṁ syādityandhabadhirādyabhāvacodya kṛtam | svasaṁvedanaṁ ca nābhyupagatamiti mīmāṁsakaiḥ parokṣaṁ vijñānamarthāpattigamyaṁ pratyakṣo'rtha iṣyate | naiyāyikādibhistu jñānāntaragamyaṁ jñānamiṣyate na svasaṁvedanaṁ siddhaṁ svātmani kāritvavirodhāt | yogijñānaṁ ca nābhyupagatamiti saṁbandhaḥ | mīmāṁsakādaya evamāhuḥ | yogina eva na saṁprati pramāṇābhāvāt kiṁ punaḥ teṣāṁ jñānamiti indriyāśritamiti cakṣurādīndriyacatuṣṭayaṁ gṛhyate | na mana indriyaṁ tasya svasaṁvedanapratyakṣe pratipādyamānatvāt | indriyāśritaṁ vijñānaṁ pratyakṣamiti bruvatā thismuc vārtikakṛtā na cakṣuḥ pramāṇamiti kathitaṁ bhavati yasmājjñānasyaivānvayavyatirekānuvidhānādrūpādidarśane sāmarthyaṁ na cakṣuṣaḥ | yatūktaṁ jñānaṁ cetpaśyati vyavahitamapi kiṁ na paśyati amūrtasyāvācakābhāvāditi tadayuktaṁ yato yogyadeśenaivārthena tajjñānaṁ janyate na vyavahitena vijñānādarśanāt |
svaśabdasya vivaraṇaṁ ātmīya itīndriyavijñānasyātmīyaḥ viṣayakṣaṇaḥ | tasyānāntara ityasya vivaraṇaṁ na vidyata ityādi | antaraśabdasya vivaraṇaṁ vyavadhānamityādi | samānajātīya upādeyakṣaṇa indriyavijñānaviṣayasyāvyavahitaḥ samānajātīyakṣaṇa ucyate | sa copādeyakṣaṇo viṣayaḥ |viṣayagrahaṇenālokasyānantarasya nirāsaḥ | sa tathābhūtaḥ sahakārī yasyeti saṁbandhaḥ | nanu ca kathaṁ viṣayakṣaṇasya sahakāritvamekasminkṣaṇe upakāryopakārakabhāvābhāvādityata āha dvividhaścetyādi | evaṁ manyate | nātropakārakatvātsahakāritvamapi tvekakāryakāritvāditi | tadeva darśayati viṣayetyādinā | īdṛśeneti svaviṣayānantaraviṣayasahakāriṇondriyajñānenālambanapratyayabhūteneti | yadā yogijñānaṁ parasyaivaṁvidhajñānamālambate tadālambanabhūtena yogijñānaṁ janyata iti | samaścāsāvityanantarakṣaṇasyāpi jñānatvāt | samanantara iti ca bhavati śakandhvādiṣu pāṭhāt paranūpatvaṁ yataḥ sa ceti samanantaraḥ hetutvāditi pratyayārthakathanametat | tena janitamityādinaitatkathayati | indriyavijñānena svaviṣayānantaraviṣayasahakāriṇopādānabhūtena yajjanitaṁ tadeva manovijñānaṁ pratyakṣaṁ na ālambanabhūtena janitamityarthaḥ | yadā cetyādinā dvayorekaṁ viṣayaṁ gṛhītvā yañcoditaṁ pareṇa tatparihṛtaṁ pūrvakṣaṇa indriyavijñānasya viṣayo dvitīyakṣaṇe manovijñānasya viṣaya ityagṛhītagrāhi manovijñānamiti | yadā cetyādinā yaccodyaṁ kṛtaṁ yadi manovijñānamindriyasavyapekṣaṁ na syānmanovijñānasyendriyavijñānaviṣayādanyo viṣayaḥ tadāndhabadirādyabhāvaḥ vyavahitasya nīlādergrahaṇaṁ bhavatviti tatparihṛtam | yasmādindriyavijñānaviṣayasya dvitīyopādeyabhūtaviṣayakṣaṇo gṛhīto manovijñānaviṣayaḥ tasmādyavahitakṣaṇo viṣayo na bhavatyasyāndhabadirādeścātīndriyavijñānam | vijñānaviṣayānantaraviṣayasahakāri vidyate | tena teṣāṁ na manovijñānaṁ bhavatīti parihṛtam | svaviṣayānantaraviṣayasahakāriṇotyudyamāne śabdaviṣayaṁ mānasaṁ na prāpnoti śrotravijñānaviṣayācchabdādaparasyopādeyakṣaṇasyānutpatteḥ śabdasyoccheditvāt | aparasya śabdasya śabdādanutpatterityavaśyaṁ mānasaṁ pratyakṣaśabdaviṣayameṣṭavyam | anyathā pañca bāhyā vijñeyā ityasya vyāghātaḥ syāt | svaviṣayānantaraviṣayaśabdena śrotravijñānaviṣayānantarayogyaviṣayo gṛhyate nopādeyakṣaṇa eva tena vijñānaviṣayadeśe'paraśabdo yadotpadyate tadā mānasaṁ pratyakṣaṁ svaviṣayānantaraviṣayasahakāriṇā janitaṁ bhavatītyadoṣaḥ | etaccetyādinā manovijñānasyotpattiviṣayaṁ darśayati | uparate cakṣuṣīti | yadā cakṣurviṣayamālocyoparataṁ bhavati tadālocanāviṣaye cakṣurvijñānamutpannaṁ satpunardvitīye kṣaṇa ātmīyaviṣayānantaraviṣayenotpādyata indriyāṇāṁ tatra vyāpārābhāvāt |tataśca tenendriyavijñānena svaviṣayānantaraviṣayasahakāriṇā mānasapratyakṣamutpadyata iti sthitam | nanvekasminkṣaṇe tasyotpādake sati na tatra kācidarthakriyāvāpyata iti puruṣārthānupayogitvātprāmāṇyaṁ prāpnoti | ucyate | na mānasapratyakṣeṇāsmadvidhānāmarthakriyāvāptirbhavati api tu yogino vītarāgādeḥ | te ca tasminkṣaṇe mānase copadarśitaṁ viṣayaṁ pratipadya dharmadeśanādikāmarthakriyāmāsādayantītyinavadyam | atha vyāpāravati cakṣuṣi kimiti mānasotpattirlupyata ityāha vyāpāravatityādi sarvendriyāśritaṁ jñānaṁ cakṣurvijñānameva na mānasasyotpattirastītyabhiprāyaḥ| nanu vyāpāravati cakṣuṣi prathame kṣaṇa indriyavijñānaṁ bhavati dvitīye kṣaṇe mānasaṁ bhavati yadyapi samānajātīyayoryugapadutpattirnāstītyāha itarathetyādi | evaṁ manyate| vyāpāravati cakṣuṣi kimitīndriyavijñānaṁ notpadyate dvitīye kṣaṇe yogyakaraṇe sati samānanūpaṁ tena tayoḥ kathamindriyavijñānavyapadeśo na syāditi | nanu ca yadi mānasaṁ pratyakṣaṁ indriyajñānādbhinnaṁ pratyakṣādipramāṇasiddhaṁ bhavettadā tasya lakṣaṇaṁ yāvatā pramāṇasiddhameva nāstītyāha etaccetyādi | evaṁjātīyakamitīndriyavijñānasadṛśaṁ tadetaddharmottareṇāgamasiddhaṁ darśayatācāryajñānagarbhaprabhṛtīnāṁ mānasasiddhaye yatpramāṇamupanyastaṁ vikalpodayāditi tadbhaṅgyāvadhāraṇādeva dūṣitam | tairevaṁ vyākhyātaṁ vyāpāravati cakṣuṣīndriyajñānamutpadyate mānasaṁ ca | na śakyate vaktuṁ dvayoryugapadutpattirnāstīti | yataḥ samānendriyayornāsti na bhinnendriyayoḥ ṣaṇāṁ yugapadutpattiriti vacanāt | tataśca dvayorbhinnendriyayoryugapadutpattiḥ | na ca tatra bhedenānupalabhyamānaṁ mānasaṁ nāstīti śakyate vaktuṁ samānajātīyanīlavikalpodayāt | yadi ca tanna mānasaṁ syāttatpṛṣṭhabhāvī nīlavikalpā ne syādeva | samānādvi mānasātmano vikalpasyotpattirbhavati na vijātīyādindriyavijñānāditi | yathā deevadattena nīle gṛhīte na yajñadattasya nīlaniścayo bhavati | tathendriyavijñānamanovijñānasaṁtānayorbhinnatvāt | na tathā mānasamanovikalpasaṁtānayorbhinnasaṁtānatvam dvayorapyanindriyatvāt manovyapadeśācceti | atrocyate | yaduktaṁ tāvatsamānajātīyavikalpodayāditi tatsidvau yatsādhanaṁ tadanaikāntikam | vijātīpādapyutpattidarśanādanvayavyatirakobhyām | na ca vyāpāravati cakṣuṣi mānasasyotpattirasti na ca dvayornīlavijñānayorutpattirnirvikalpayordṛśyate anupalabhyamānatvāttayoḥ | tenendriyavijñānādeva vijātīyādvikalpakasyotpatterna vikalpasyodayāditi mānasasiddhau hetuḥ | na ca devadattayajñadattayorivabhinnasaṁtānavartitvaṁ savikalpakanirvikalpakayoḥ | yena bhinnasaṁtānānnirvikalpakādutpattirna syādekasaṁtānapātitvāttayoravaśyaṁ cāṅgīkartavyā vijātīyā vikalpasyotpattiryena vārtikakāra evamāha |

svavyāpāratvakaraṇātsmaraṇādityādi |
saṁvicchabdenendriyavijñānamevocyate na mānasam | tataśca tatsāmarthyabhāvi kathaṁ vikalpavijñānaṁ smaraṇaṁ vijātīyatvāt | na ca tatra mānasaṁ saṁviducyata indriyavijñānasya vyavahāreṇa prāmāṇyasya cintyatvāt | kiṁ cendriyavijñānasya kathaṁ prāmāṇyaṁ yadi svavyāpāraṁ karoti | svavyāpārastu svaviṣaye vikalpajanakatvaṁ nāma | tataśca vijātīyādapi vikalpasyodayāditi yatkiṁcidetat|
nanu cittacaittā iti vaktavye sarvagrahaṇasya vyāvartyābhāvādapārthakaṁ tadgrahaṇamityāha sukhādaya evetyādi | na kevalaṁ prasiddhāḥ sukhādayaḥ cittacaittā svasaṁvedanā gṛhyatte anye'pi svasaṁvedanā iti tātparyam | amumevārthaṁ darśayati nāstītyādinā | śuddhasya cittāvasthānūpasyāsaṁveditasyābhāvamāheti bhāvaḥ | evaṁ bruvatā ṭīkākṛtānena nirodhasamāpattyavasthāyāṁ śuddhacittābhāva evetyabhiprāyaḥ pradarśitaḥ tasyāmavasthāyāṁ na kāciccittāvasthā saṁvedyate yataḥ | nanu cittacaittā nāmātmasaṁvedanaṁ nāsti syātmani kāritvavirodhādityuktamityāha yena hītyādi | yasmādanena bodhasvanūpeṇātmasvanūpaṁ vedyate tatpratyakṣamātmasaṁvedanamucyate | evaṁ manyate | yathā pradīpaḥ prakāśatayaṁ svanūpaṁ nivedayannātmaprakāśane na pradīpāttaramapekṣate tathā cittādikamapi saṁvidrūpatayā svanūpaṁ nivedayannātmasaṁvedane na jñānāttaramapekṣate | na ca svātmani kāritvavirodho yato vāstavakārakatvābhāvaḥ | atrāpi kalpanayā prakāśyaprakāśakatvena karmakartṛbhāvaḥ | tatrāpi nīlākārotpattireva prakāśakatvaṁ jñānasya pradīpasyāpi prāgbhāvitvameva | prakāśakatvaṁ kalpanāparo vyāpāraḥ | bodhasya tu bodhanūyatayotpattireva svaprakāśakatvam | tataśca vijñānaṁ bodhanūpatayā pratyakṣeṇānubhūyamānaṁ kathamapahnūyate bhavatā parokṣaṁ vijñānamiti | evaṁ tāvanmīmāṁsakādīnprati vijñānaṁ svasaṁvedanapratyakṣaṁ nirdiṣṭam | yastu sāṁkhyo'pi bāhyanūpāḥ sukhādaya iti manyate taṁ pratyāha iha ca nūpādo dṛśyamāna ityādi | evaṁ manyate | nīlanūpātsātādikamantaraṁ saṁvedanaṁ pratyakṣeṇānubhūyamānaṁ na bāhyenābhinnanūpaṁ jaḍanūpaṁ ca śakyate vaktumiti | amumevārthaṁ na ca gṛhyamānākāra ityādinā darśayati | sākṣātkāritvavyāpāra iti pratyakṣasya vyāpāraḥ | vikalpastatpṛṣṭhabhāvo | na ca nīlasya sātanūpatvamanugamyata iti tatpṛṣṭhabhāvinā vikalpena sātanūpo nīlādirnānugamyata ityarthaḥ | tena nīlādiḥ sātasvabhāvo na pratyakṣasiddha iti sāṁkhyaṁ nirākurvatā grāhyagrāhakaṁ sātādinūpaṁ bhinnaṁ pratyakṣaṁ pradarśitam | tena yuktamuktaṁ keścit grāhyādbhinnaṁ grāhakaṁ na pratyakṣeṇānubhūyata iti tena kiṁcinnāma nāpahnutaṁ bhavatītyuktam | tasmātsarvāṇyetāni cittacaittāni svasaṁvedanapratyakṣāṇīti | teṣāṁ lakṣaṇaṁ yojayati taccetyādinā | tatpratyakṣaṁ svasaṁvedananūpaṁ nirvikalpakaṁ tatra śabdādiyojanābhāvāt | kutaḥ | śabdena saṁketābhāvāt | abhrāntaṁ ca tadvijñānaṁ svanūpe'viparyastatvād bādhakābhāvācceti |
bhāvyamānārthābhāsasyeti kṣaṇikatvādigrāhiṇaḥ | skuṭābhavārambha ityādyatiśayasyopakramāttataḥ pareṇātiśayābhāvājjñānasya | tataśca kṣaṇikatvādigrāhi manovijñānaṁ bhāvyamānamīṣadasaṁpūrṇamantakṣaṇaḥ | prakarṣaparyanta ucyate | tadeva darśayati yadā sphuṭābhatvamityādinā | tadiha sphuṭābhatvārambhe tyādinopasaṁhāravyājena yogino manovijñānasyāvasthātrayaṁ darśayati | bhāvanāprakarṣāvasthekā prakarṣaparyantāvasthā dvitīyā bhāvyamānasya karatalāmalakavaddarśanaṁ yoginaḥ tṛtīyāvastheti | taddhi sphuṭābhamityādinā yogino manovijñānamapi sphuṭābhatvādevendriyavijñānavannirvikalpakaṁ darśayati |
nirvikalpānubaddhasya spaṣṭārthaḥ pratibhāsate |
iti nyāyādyadyapi manojñānena bhāvanāprakarṣaparyantajena śabdārthauo yugapadgṛhyete tathāpi dvayoḥ svanūpasya sannihitatayā gṛhyamāṇatvāttadgrāhi vijñānaṁ nirvikalpakamiti | nuna ca manovijñānaṁ bhāvyamānaṁ vācyavācakasaṁsṛṣṭaṁ pratibhāsate yathā tathaiva bhāvyamānaṁ prakarṣaparyantajaṁ manovijñānaṁ vācyavācakapratibhāsi sphuṭābhaṁ bhavati | tadā sphuṭābhatvānnirvikalpako'pamityanaikāntiko heturiti paccoditaṁ pareṇa tatparihartumupakramate vikalpavijñānaṁ hītyādinā | evaṁ manyate | yadyapi manovijñānaṁ vācyavācakasaṁsṛṣṭapratibhāsi tathāpi sphuṭābhatvāvasthāyāṁ tadalīkākāraṁ vācyavācakanūpamapaiti vittinūpaṁ tu tasya nijam | atastadeva cidrūpaṁ jñānaṁ sphuṭaṁ bhavati na vācyavācakākāratayā tayorāropitanūpatvāt | āropitanūpagrahaṇasphuṭatvameva na syāditi nānaikāntikatvaṁ hetoḥ sphuṭābhatvādityasya | yadā tu vikalpavijñānaṁ śabdasaṁsargayogyavastu gṛhṇāti tadā saṁketakāladṛṣṭatvena tadvastu gṛhṇāti | tadasaṁnihitaṁ tadā tasya saṁketābhāvāt | tacca pūrvadṛṣṭaṁ pūrvavijñānasya viṣayaḥ | tacca pūrvavijñānaṁ saṁprati śabdasaṁsargayogyavastugrahaṇakāle nāsti kṣaṇikatvājjñānasya | tadvatpūrvavijñānaviṣayatvamapi saṁprati nāsti viṣayiṇo jñānasyābhāve viṣayasyāpyarthasya saṁketakālabhāvinojbhāva ityasaṁnihataṁ saṁketakālabhāvi tadvastvāropya gṛhṇadvikalpavijñānamasphuṭaṁ bhavatīti | sphuṭatvaṁ tato nivṛttaṁ nirvikalpe'vatiṣṭhata iti vyāptiḥ siddhyati | tataḥ sphuṭatvānnirvikalpakaṁ yogijñānamabhrāntaṁ ca pramāṇena śuddhārthagrāhitvātsaṁvādakam | iyadeveti indriyavijñānādārabhya yogijñānaparyantaṁ naikamevendriyapratyakṣamityarthaḥ | nāpyadhikamadhikasyānupalambhāt ||
prakārabhedamiti pratyakṣaṁ sāmānyaṁ nirvikalpakamabhrāntaṁ tasya prakārabheda indriyajñānādiḥ | taṁ pratipādyetyarthaḥ | viṣayavipratipattimiti | iha kaiścinmīmāṁsakādimiḥ pratyakṣasya sāmānyaviśeṣau dvāvapi viṣayau kalpitau | anumānasya sāmānyameva viṣayaḥ na viśeṣaḥ | sāṁkhyena dvayorapi viśeṣo viṣaya iṣṭaḥ sāmānyasyābhāvāt | vedāntavādinā ca sāmānyameva viṣayo dvayoḥ ātmadvaitatayā sarvasyaikatvādviśeṣe bhrāntatvāddvayoriti vipratipattiḥ pratyakṣādiviṣaye | svalakṣaṇami tyaneneṣṭaṁ viṣayaṁ darśayati | tattvamityarthakriyākāri | anena lakṣaṇaśabdo vivṛtaḥ | lakṣyate dāhādyarthakriyā yena tatlakṣaṇam | etaddarśayati | asādhāraṇameva tattva vastuno nūpam| sādhāraṇaṁ tu tattvamāropitaṁ nūpaṁ pūrvāparakṣaṇānāmabhedādhyavasāyāt | ato vastuno nūpadvayamasādhāraṇaṁ sāmānyaṁ ca | tatrāsādhāraṇatattvaṁ pratyakṣasya grāhyaviṣaya iti darśayati yadasādhāraṇamityādinā | nanu kimucyate grāhyaviṣaya iti yāvatā kimanyo viṣayo'sti pratyakṣasya | astītyāha dvividha ityādi | yamadhyavasyatīti yaṁ saṁtānanūpeṇa sthitamarthaṁ tatpṛṣṭhabhāvinā vikalpena niścinoti | nanu ca kathaṁ pratyakṣasya saṁtāno viṣayo yato vikalpasyāsau viṣayaḥ | ucyate | upacārāt | pratyakṣavyāpāreṇa vikalpenādhyavaseyatayā,viṣayīkṛtatvātpratyakṣaviṣayaṁ ityucyata upacārādityadoṣaḥ | dvaividhyameva sphuṭayatya anyo hītyādinā | tathānumānamityādinā prasaṅgenānumānasyāpi viṣayadvaividhyaṁ darśayati | svalakṣaṇatvenāvasīyata iti dāhādyarthakriyāsamarthatvenāvasīyata ityarthaḥ | tadetratyādinā pramāṇacintāyāṁ grāhyaviṣayadarśano'yaṁ na prāpyaṁ viṣayamiti darśayati | grāhya eva viṣaye sarveṣāṁ vipratipatteḥ |
kaḥ punarasau viṣaya ityādi | evaṁ manyeta | nanu pratyakṣasya svalakṣaṇaṁ viṣaya ityukte sāmānyamapi tasya viṣaya iti tadapi svalakṣaṇaṁ prāpnotīti praśnaḥ | asaṁnidhānaṁ dūradeśāvasthānamiti bruvatā vinītadevasya vyākhyā dūṣitā | tena hyevaṁ vyākhyātaṁ sarveṇa nūpeṇa vastuno'bhāvo'saṁnidhānamiti | etadasaṁgataṁ yasmādvastunaḥ tatrābhāve jñānameva na bhavati | tataśca jñānapratibhāsabheda iti na ghaṭate | yo hītyādinaitaddarśayati | arthakriyāsamarthasyaiva saṁnidhānāsaṁnidhānābhyāṁ sphuṭāsphuṭapratibhāsabhedo na sāmānyasyeti | na sāmānyaṁ svalakṣaṇam | āropitanūyasya dūrāsannābhyāṁ sarvadaivāsphuṭatvāditi | nanu sāmānyameva dūre gṛhyamāṇamasphuṭapratibhāsaṁ na svalakṣaṇamityāha sarvāṇyevetyādi sāmānyasyāvidyamānatvādityabhiprāyaḥ | ataḥ tānyeva svalakṣaṇāni sphuṭāsphuṭapratibhāsīni na sāmānyam | nanu yadi dūrāsannābhyāṁ svalakṣaṇaṁ spaṣṭāspaṣṭapratibhāsaṁ nūpadvayaṁ tasya syāt tataśca nikaṭasthitasya pratibhāsadvayaṁ syāt na ca niyamo dūre'spaṣṭaṁ nikaṭe spaṣṭamiti | ucyate na hi nīlaṁ vastu spaṣṭanūpamaspaṣṭaṁ ca api tu nīlaṁ sādhyārthakriyāsamarthaṁ nīlaparamāṇunūpam | spaṣṭāspaṣṭākārau copādhikṛtau | yadā dūre nīlaṁ paśyati tadālokaparamāṇūnāṁ ca rajaḥparamāṇubhirabhibhūtatvātspaṣṭapratibhāsaṁ jñānaṁ bhavati | nikaṭe tu ālokaparamāṇūnāṁ bahutvānna te rajaḥparamāṇubhirabhibhūtā iti spaṣṭapratibhāsaṁ jñānaṁ jāyate | jñānasya spaṣṭādidvāreṇārthasya spaṣṭāspaṣṭanūpe bhavato na paramārthata iti | sāmānyasya tu jñānadvāreṇa na spaṣṭāspaṣṭanūpe | tena na tatsvalakṣaṇam | nanu tasya viṣayaḥ svalakṣaṇamityuktaṁ tatra yadi pratyakṣasyaiva viṣayo bhavati svalakṣaṇaṁ nānyasyeti tadānumānāderna svalakṣaṇaviṣayaḥ | kiṁ tu pratyakṣasyānyo viṣayaḥ syāt | atha pratyakṣasya svalakṣaṇaṁ viṣayo nānyaḥ | tadānumānasya svalakṣaṇaṁ viṣayo na niṣiddha iti svalakṣaṇaviṣayamanumānaṁ syāditi manyamānaḥ pṛcchati | kasmātpunari tyādinā nānumānasya | vikalpasya viṣayo vāstavo na bhavati | kathaṁ svalakṣaṇaṁ bhavatītyāha tathāhītyādi | yadyapi vikalpasya viṣayo vastu na bhavati tathāpi sa eva svalakṣaṇaṁ dāhādyarthakriyānūpeṇa vyavasāyādityabhiprāyaḥ |
tadeva paramārthasaditi | evaṁ manyate | na hāropabalādavastu vastu bhavati sarvasya śaśaviṣāṇādervastutvaprasaṅgāt | vastu tadevānupacaritasvanūpaṁ ataḥ tadeva svalakṣaṇam | nanu vikalpaviṣayo'pyarthaḥ paramārthasanneva | idameva paramārthasattvaṁ nāma yaduta jñāne pratibhāsanam | sāmānyamapi jñāne pratibhāsate tadapi paramārtha saditi manyamānaḥ pṛcchati | kṛsmātpunastadeva paramārthasaditi | arthyata ityādinārthakriyāsāmarthyalakṣaṇatvapadasyārthaṁ vivṛṇoti | tadayamartha ityādinā samudāyasya padānāṁ tātparyaṁ darśayati | evaṁ manyate | yasmādarthakriyāsamarthaṁ paramārthasan tasmānna sāmānyaṁ paramārthasan | dāhādyarthakriyāyāmanupayogāt | na ca pratibhāsabalāttattvamasadrūpasyāpyavidyābalapratibhāsanāt | na ca jñānajanakatvenārthakriyākāritvaṁ tasya jñānasya vināpi sāmānyena vāsanābalātsāmānyaviṣayasyotpatteriti |
etasmādityādinānumānasya viṣayaṁ darśayati | tathāhītyādinā pratyakṣaviṣayeṇa saha vikalpaviṣayasya sāmānyasya visadṛśatvaṁ darśayati | kathaṁ punarvikalpasya viṣayo bhavati sāmānyamityāha samāropyamāṇamiti sakalavahnisādhāraṇatayā sāmānyākārasya saṁvedyatvādityabhiprāyaḥ | so'numānasya viṣayo grāhyanūpa iti grāhyaṁ nūpamasyeti bahuvrīhiḥ | atrāpi grāhyāpekṣayā viṣayo vyavasthāpito na prāpyāpekṣayā tatrāvipratipatteḥ | nanu tatsāmānyamiti napuṁsakaliṅgaṁ prastutya sa ityanena puṁtliṅgena parāmarśaḥ kathamityāha sarvanāmnetyādi | kasmātpunaḥ pratyakṣapariccheda anumānasya viṣayavipratipattirnirākṛtā vārtikakāreṇa nānumānapariccheda ityāha sāmānyalakṣaṇamityādi | evaṁ manyate | yadyanumānaparicchede'numānasya viṣayo vyavasthāpyeta tadā tatraiva granthaḥ kartavyaḥ syāt | ko'sau vānumānasya viṣayaḥ pratyakṣaviṣayādanyaḥ pratyakṣasyaiva ko'sau viṣayo yadapekṣayāyamanyaḥ punarvaktavyaṁ svalakṣaṇamityevamāvartyamāne gauravaṁ syāt | tato lāghavārthaṁ atraivakathitamiti |
phalavipratipattiṁ nirākartumāheti | kathaṁ pramāṇasya phale vipratipattiḥ | tathāhi pramāṇaṁ karaṇaṁ pramitikriyāṁ vinā na bhavati yathā chittiṁ vinā na paraśuḥ | tataśca pramāṇātkaraṇātpṛthakphalenārthasaṁpravṛttilakṣaṇena bhavitavyaṁ svātmani kriyākaraṇatvavirodhāt | na hi paraśureva chittiriti | ato mīmāṁsakenendriyaṁ pramāṇamindriyārthasannikarṣaḥ manaindriyasannikarṣaḥ ātmamanaḥ sannikarṣaśceṣṭaḥ sarve sannikarṣāśceti | taduktam |
yadvendriyaṁ pramāṇaṁ syātasya cārthena saṁgatiḥ |
manaso vendriyairyoga ātmanā sarva eva vā ||
ityarthāvabodhaḥ phalaṁ tatra vyāpārācca pramāṇateti |
tadā jñānaṁ phalaṁ tatra vyāpārācca pramāṇatā |
vyāpāro na yadā teṣāṁ tadā notpadyate phalamiti ||
tathā pūrvaṁ pūrvaṁ pramāṇamuttaramuttaraṁ phalamiti coktam | tatrāpi buddhijanma pramāṇaṁ pravṛttyādikaṁ phalamiti | tathā naiyāyikādayo'pyevaṁbhūtameva pramāṇaphalamicchatti | idaṁ tvadhikaṁ viśeṣaṇajñānaṁ pramāṇaṁ viśeṣyajñānaṁ phalamiti yathoktaṁ kumārilena |
pramāṇaphalate buddhyorviśeṣaṇaviśeṣyayoḥ |
yadā tadāpi pūrvoktā bhinnārthatvanivāraṇeti ||
tadeṣāṁ vipratipattiḥ | tāṁ nirākartumāha tadeveti | kathaṁ punararthaparichittinūpaṁ pramāṇasya phalaṁ nārthapravartakādi vijñānamityāha arthasyetyādi | evaṁ manyate | yena phalena niṣpannenānantareṇa pramāṇasya karaṇatvavyapadeśo bhavati tadeva phalaṁ nānyat | arthaparicchedakatvena vijñāna utpanne svaviṣayaniścayajanakatve sati samāpto jñānasya pramāṇavyāpāra iti | arthaparicchittireva phalaṁ na pravartakādikam | amumevārthaṁ darśayatyetaduktamityādinā | pramāṇādarthaparicchittinūpasya phalasya bhinnatvaṁ darśayituṁ pramāṇajñānasya svanūpaṁ prāgdarśitamapi punarapi darśayati prāpakaṁ jñānamityādinā | evaṁ manyate | yasmātprāpakaṁ vijñānaṁ pramāṇamiṣṭamasmābhiḥ tasmātsā ca prāpaṇaśaktirathaparicchittireva nārthādutpattyādikamiti | etadeva darśayati prāpaṇaśaktirityādinā | kasmādarthāvinābhāvitvamātrameva prāpaṇaśaktirna bhavatītyāha vījādītyādi | yato bījādeḥ sakāśādaṅkurasyārthāvabhāsitvotpattirasti na ca bījādikaṁ prāpayati khalavilāntargatasyāpi bījasyāṅkurotpādakatvādityabhiprāyaḥ | tasmādityādinā jñānasyārthādutpattivyāpārādanya eva pramāṇavyāpāra iti darśayati | pūrvāparayoḥ kṣaṇayorekatvādhyavasāyātprāpyādutpattāvityuktaṁ sa eveti pramāṇavyāpāraḥ | yadyevaṁ prāpaṇaśaktiḥ phalaṁ tarhi nārthaparicchittinūpaṁ phalam | prāpakatvādarthaparichitteranyatvādityāha uktaṁ ca purastādityādi | yadeva prāpakaṁ jñānaṁ tadeva pravartakamarthapradarśakaṁ ca tadeveti purastātsaṁvarṇitaṁ pramāṇasvanūpacintāyām | tataścārthapradarśakameva prāpakaṁ tasya ca prāpaṇaśaktirarthaparicchittireva tāvatā parisamāptatvātpramāṇavyāpārasyeti sthitam | pramāṇasya phalamarthaparicchittinūpameva nānyaditi |
yadi jñānasya pramitinūpaṁ phalaṁ jñānāttarhi pramāṇena bhinnena bhavitavyamiti manyamānaḥ pṛcchati yadi tarhītyādinā | arthasānūpyamasya pramāṇamiti etasya vivaraṇaṁ arthena yatsānūpyamityādi | evaṁ manyate | arthasānūpyaṁ vijñānasya pramāṇaṁ nendriyādikamiti | viṣayādutpadyamānaṁ viṣayasadṛśaṁ bhavatīti tadeva sānūpyaṁ sādṛśyamuktamiti darśayati iha yasmādityādinā nanu cetyādi | evaṁ manyate paraḥ | indriyādikaṁ pramāṇamuktamasmābhiḥ tadeva kiṁ bauddhenāpi neṣyate yenārthasānūpyaṁ pramāṇamiṣyate | kiṁ cārthasānūpye pramāṇe'ṅgīkriyamāṇe pramāṇaphalayoraikyānnaikaṁ karma karaṇaṁ bhavatīti yaccoditaṁ tattadavasthameveti | tadvaśādityādi | evaṁ manyate | pramāṇaṁ karaṇaṁ ca sādhakatamaṁ kārakāṇām | prakṛṣṭopakārakaṁ jñānasya sānūpyameva tadvaśādarthādhigatisiddheḥ nendriyādikaṁ arthasānūpyābhāve'rthapratīterabhāvāditi | amumevārthaṁ darśayati | arthasya pratītiravabodha ityādinā | nīlanirbhāsaṁ hītyādinā nīlākāraṁ nīlavijñānasya nīlāvagamavyavasthāyā nimittaṁ darśayati | yasmānnīlākāre vijñānasyāvagate nīlapratītiravagamyate tasmādarthākāraḥ pramāṇaṁ karaṇadharmatvādasyeti | nanu ca cakṣurādibhyo vijñānamutpadyate viśiṣṭārthamavagacchantyeva | tatkathamarthākārasya prakṛṣṭopakārakatvamityāha yebhyo hītyādi | tatkathayati cakṣurādīnāmapi vijñānotpattau nimittābhāvo'sti | kiṁ tu teṣāṁ sarvajñānotpattiṁ prati nimittatvānna pratiniyatārthavyavasthāpanasya nimittatvam | arthākārasya tvasādhāraṇatvātpratiniyatārthavyavasthāpanaṁ prati nimittatvamiti | tadeva pramāṇam | yattatpareṇa coditaṁ pramāṇaphalayoraikyānna caikaṁ sādhyaṁ sādhanaṁ vā syāditi tatpariharati | na cātra janyajanaketyādinā | syādayamekasya vastuno virodho yadyayaṁ janyajanakabhāvaḥ pramāṇaphalayoḥ sādhyasādhanabhāvaḥ kiṁ tarhi vyavasthāpyavyavasthāpakabhāvaḥ | kuto jñānādhikārāt | yasmājjñāne viśiṣṭa utpanne pratipattrā viśiṣṭo'rtho jñāpyate na tyartha utpādyate | tathā hi nīlākāre vijñāna utpanne viśiṣṭajñānaṁ vyavasthāpayanti nīlajñānamanubhūtamiti na jñānamutpādayati | kiṁcidityādinaikasyaiva vijñānasyāṁśāṁśitayā vyavasthāpyavyavasthāpakatvaṁ darśayati | nanu ca nirvikalpakaṁ jñānaṁ viśiṣṭākāramutpannaṁ kathaṁ tasya samānakāla evāṁśaṁśitayā vyavasthāpyavyavasthāpakabhāvo bhavatīti manyamāna pṛcchati | vyavasthāpyavyavasthāpaketyādinā | sadṛśamityādi | evaṁ manyate | na vijñānameva nirvikalpakamātmānaṁ vyavasthāpayati kiṁtu pratyakṣapṛṣṭhabhāvinā niścayapratyayena vyavasthāpyate | tatra cārthākārasya vyavasthāpanahetutvamasānūpyavyāvṛttibhedenārthabodhatayā vyavasthāpyasyotpādena vedanasya tu vyavasthāpyatvam | niścayapratyayastu vyavasthāpaka iti amumevārthaṁ darśayati | tasmādityādinā | nanu nīlajñānamutpannaṁ svasaṁvedanapratyakṣasiddhaṁ yadi niścayavaśātpramāṇavyavasthā labhyate tadā yujyate vaktuṁ niścayapratyayena vyavasthāpyata iti yāvatā niścayapratyayaṁ vināpi pramāṇaṁ bhavatyevetyāha niścayapratyayenāvyavasthāpitamityādi darśayati | yāvatpratyakṣaṁ svaviṣaye svātmani niścayaṁ notpādayati na tāvatpramāṇaṁ bhavati ātmavyāpārānirvartanāt | tataścādhyavasāyaṁ kurvadeva pramāṇamiti niścayamapekṣate | nanu yadi niścayaṁ vinā pramāṇameva na bhavati pratyakṣaṁ vikalpasahitaṁ tarhi pratyakṣaṁ pramāṇaṁ syānna kevalaṁ tadanvayavyatirekāditi manyamānaścodayati yadyevamityādinā | naitadevam |
